AQ and Efecto Naím Air Joint Report on the NRA's Activities in the Hemisphere

June 2, 2013

Americans have long seen the effectiveness of the National Rifle Association in blocking gun control legislation in the United States. But fewer know about their surprising efforts outside of the United States, from Brazil to Canada, and even in the United Nations.

The ninth joint report by Americas Quarterly and Efecto Naím, which aired on Sunday, June 2, looks at why the U.S.-based gun lobby is fighting gun control throughout the Americas, and what it could mean for the fight to reduce gun violence.

The episode was inspired by a recent AQ article by Wendy Cukier, the president of the Canadian Coalition for Gun Control and vice president of research and innovation at Ryerson University in Toronto. Cukier's recent article, "The NRA's Hemispheric Reach," appeared in the Spring 2013 issue of AQ  and explored how the NRA promotes gun rights across the hemisphere.

AQ Editor-in-Chief Christopher Sabatini appears in the episode, along with Richard Aborn, who is president of the Citizens Crime Commission of New York City, the author of the AQ article, "Prisons: In Jail But Not Sentenced," and an outspoken gun control advocate.

Efecto Naím is a weekly television news program broadcast by NTN24 and hosted by international news commentator Moisés Naím. The show airs Sunday evenings on channels in the U.S., Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Peru, and Venezuela.
