AQ Contributing Photographer Nicolas Villaume Chosen for AI-AP Latin American Fotografía Winners Slide Show

October 19, 2012

Americas Quarterly is proud to congratulate Nicolas Villaume, a frequent contributing photographer to AQ, for his selection by American Illustration and American Photography (AI-AP) as a chosen winner of the 2012 Latin American Fotografía and Ilustración competition.

Nicolas’ award-winning photo, “Danza de las Tijeras,” was originally published in the “Scissors Dancers” photo essay that appeared in the Summer 2011 issue of AQ. In an issue dedicated to sports and athletes across the Americas, Nicolas’ images of Peruvian scissors dancers stood out for capturing the dancers’ colorful costumes and gravity-defying athleticism as they merged Quechua legend and extreme sports. His winning photo can be seen here.

Out of approximately 1,500 submitted images, the AI-AP jury selected only 20 photographs and 20 illustrations to represent the year’s best images. The jury also chose an additional 28 photos and 30 illustrations to appear in a slide show collection and be permanently on display in AI-AP’s online archive. Nicolas’ photo was chosen to appear in the AI-AP slideshow. Winners of the Latin American Fotografía and Ilustración competition will be acknowledged at a party on November 9 at the Angel Orensanz Foundation as part of New York City’s Illustration Week.
