Position: Paid Internship, Americas Quarterly (Fall 2017)

AQ is the premier publication on politics, business and culture in Latin America. AQ is an independent publication of Americas Society/Council of the Americas, New York

Internship Period: September 15 - December 15

Are you passionate about Latin America? The paid summer internship at Americas Quarterly offers enterprising journalists the opportunity to engage in all aspects of producing a magazine while writing about the most important political, economic and cultural topics in the region.

As an intern, you will: research, write, and edit for the print magazine and AQ’s website; develop social media and multimedia content; work with AS/COA’s policy research and support team; assist with administrative tasks as needed.

Areas of Focus

  • Researching and writing pieces for AQ
  • Working with journalists, regional experts, and AQ staff on developing story ideas and seeing them through from initial pitch to publication
  • Participating in long-term planning and brainstorming sessions for future AQ issues.
  • Assisting with all aspects of the production of AQ, including administrative correspondence with authors, editing, and proofreading
  • Providing logistical support for events and arranging meeting details and project-related trips (agenda, hotels, outreach, etc.)
  • Assisting in the planning, coordination, and execution of magazine launch events, policy roundtables, and other programs
  • Developing website and social media content


We are looking for journalists who are quick learners with a deep knowledge of Latin America. Ideal candidates are:

  • Graduate students or recent graduates in journalism, economics, international studies, or related fields; or bachelor’s in the same with 1–3 years of relevant experience
  • Proficient in English and Spanish and/or Portuguese. Additional language skills a plus
  • Familiar with major business and economic trends in Latin America and in general
  • Knowledgeable and interesed in Latin American history, politics, culture, and economics
  • Proficient in multimedia (video/sound editing)
  • Excellent English writers and editors
  • Excellent researchers
  • Demonstrated organizational, communications, and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of social media tools (e.g., Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Flickr).

Time Requirement: The internship will be approximately 28 hours a week, for three months. This can be extended on a case-by-case basis. The internship will begin on September 15, depending on availability.
